A bit of history
It was at the end of the 7th century that the hermit Dadon chose this wild site in the shape of a shell (concha in Latin, conca in Occitan, hence the name Conques) to withdraw into solitude. Thus was born a monastery of Benedictines. Thanks to the relics of Sainte-Foy that a monk stole from Agen in the year 866, Conques became a center of pilgrimage and then a major stopover on the way to Santiago de Compostela in Aveyron. Little by little, the cult of the Saint spread through Western Christendom, and an agglomeration was gradually formed in the vicinity of the religious center, populated by merchants and craftsmen who built, in addition to a belt of walls to protect the city, many houses whose half-timbered facades or roofs covered with lauzes contribute, nowadays, to the beauty of this jewel of Aveyron that you can discover from our cottage near Conques.
The Sainte-Foy abbey and the treasury
Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, the abbey church of Conques, a major monument of medieval architectural heritage, houses an incomparable treasure of Romanesque sculptures with its tympanum of the Last Judgment and its historiated capitals. The abbey also has magnificent stained glass windows made by the Aveyron artist Pierre Soulages. Conques also houses another infinitely precious treasure made up of numerous reliquaries covered with gold and silver, enamels, cameos, intaglios and precious stones. For further information, you can visit the Conques tourist office website.
